Ask where to stay in Chiang Mai and you’ll be told Nimman or the Old City. Both answers are reasonable, and they suit different people for clear reasons.

## Where Nimman wins

**Infrastructure.** Modern buildings, reliable air conditioning, fast internet, and the pools and gyms that come with newer condo stock. If you’re working remotely and taking calls, this matters daily.

**Café and restaurant density.** Nothing else in northern Thailand comes close. You can eat somewhere different every night for months.

**Community.** The largest concentration of foreign residents, coworking spaces and the events that come with them. If you want to meet people quickly, this is where it happens.

**Convenience.** Maya mall, supermarkets, a cinema, and easy access to the road up Doi Suthep.

## Where the Old City wins

**Walkability.** Genuinely the best in the city. Flat, compact, and full of small lanes that make walking a pleasure rather than a chore.

**Atmosphere.** You’re living inside a seven-hundred-year-old walled city with thirty temples. That’s not a small thing, and it doesn’t fade with familiarity.

**Cost.** Older stock is cheaper for the same space, and guesthouse monthly rates can be very reasonable.

**Food.** Market food, temple food courts, and some of the best cheap eating in Chiang Mai within a short walk.

**Events.** The Sunday Walking Street runs through it. So do most of the city’s festivals.

## Where they both lose

Both are the two most visitor-facing areas in Chiang Mai, which means both carry a price premium and a tourist layer that other neighbourhoods don’t.

If cost is your priority, Santitham beats both. If quiet is your priority, Wat Ket beats both. It’s worth knowing that the two obvious answers are not the only answers.

## The decision

**Choose Nimman if** you’re working remotely, want modern accommodation, care about coffee and restaurants, want to meet people, or plan to stay three months or more.

**Choose the Old City if** you’re visiting for under two weeks, won’t have a scooter, came for the temples and history, want to walk everywhere, or want atmosphere over infrastructure.

**Consider a compromise:** the streets between them — the Santitham side, or the Old City’s western edge near Suan Dok Gate — give you reasonable access to both at lower cost than either.

Which is better for digital nomads, Nimman or the Old City?

Nimman, in most cases. It has the highest density of work-friendly cafés, several coworking spaces, modern condos with fast internet, and the largest community of other remote workers. The Old City works if you prefer atmosphere and walkability over infrastructure.

Which is cheaper?

The Old City, generally, for comparable accommodation — though both have a wide range. Older Old City apartments and guesthouse monthly rates undercut Nimman's modern condo stock. Food is cheap in both, more so in the Old City's market areas.

Which is quieter?

It depends on the specific street more than the area. Nimman's main sois and the Old City's Tha Phae Gate end are both loud; the quiet pockets in each are genuinely quiet. Always visit a specific place in the evening before committing.
