## The pleasant one

Jing Jai — usually just JJ — is the weekend market Chiang Mai residents actually go to for pleasure rather than errands. It runs on Saturday and Sunday mornings on the northern side of the city, in a shaded compound with trees, permanent structures and a farmers’ market at its heart.

It’s the least touristed of the major markets and the most comfortable to browse slowly. This guide sits under our

## What’s there

**The farmers’ market.** The core of it. Organic and small-farm produce brought in by growers from the hills and valleys around Chiang Mai — vegetables, herbs, eggs, honey, rice, coffee. Quality is genuinely high and prices reflect that, sitting above Warorot but below supermarket organic ranges.

**Makers and crafts.** Ceramics, textiles, leather, woodwork, jewellery, natural soaps and cosmetics. Mostly small independent producers, many of them selling their own work. This is where to buy something that isn’t in every souvenir shop in the Old City.

**Plants.** A substantial plant section, and if you live here it’s the best place to buy for a balcony or garden.

**Food and coffee.** A large prepared-food area with shaded seating: brunch plates, baked goods, juices, and several good coffee operations. This has become a destination in its own right.

**Art and prints.** A rotating set of stalls from local artists and designers.

## Practicalities

| Detail | Guidance |
| --- | --- |
| Days | Saturday and Sunday mornings |
| Hours | Roughly 6:30am to early afternoon |
| Best time | 8–10am |
| Location | Northern Chiang Mai, off the Assadathorn road area |
| Getting there | Scooter, Grab or songthaew; parking available |
| Payment | Cash and increasingly QR |
| Bring | A tote bag, and a coffee budget |

## How to do it well

**Arrive by 8am.** Two reasons: the produce is complete, and the food area still has tables. By 10:30 on a Sunday both of those change.

**Do the produce first, food second.** Shop while the selection is good, then sit down.

**Bring your own bag.** The market has a mild environmental ethos and you’ll feel conspicuous accepting six plastic bags.

**Talk to the growers.** Many stalls are the actual farm, and they’ll tell you what’s good this week and how to cook it.

**Budget more than you planned.** Everything is nice, which is the problem.

## Who it suits

**Residents,** especially anyone who cooks. This is the produce shop that makes cooking at home in Chiang Mai worthwhile.

**Weekend visitors** looking for a relaxed morning rather than a sightseeing item.

**Anyone buying gifts.** The craft quality here is considerably better than the walking streets, and the makers are usually present.

It suits less well anyone looking for cheap volume shopping — for that,

Warorot

is the better market and a fraction of the price.

## Combining it

Jing Jai works well as the anchor of a slow weekend morning: market at 8am, brunch on site, then a café or a walk. It’s not near the Old City, so treat it as its own trip rather than something to squeeze between other plans.

Got questions?

## Common questions

When is Jing Jai market on?

Weekend mornings, Saturday and Sunday, typically from around 6:30am until early afternoon. The best time is between 8 and 10am — the produce is at its fullest and it hasn't got hot yet. The wider Jing Jai complex has some permanent shops and cafés open on other days.

What can I buy at Jing Jai?

Organic produce direct from northern Thai growers, handmade crafts, ceramics, textiles, plants, artwork, natural cosmetics and prepared food. It's the best market in Chiang Mai for good vegetables and for small-batch makers.

Is it good for breakfast?

It's one of the city's better weekend brunch options. There's a substantial food and coffee section with shaded seating, and the quality is well above typical market fare. Go early if you want a table.
